The KL Chess Asia Academy – Kuala Lumpur, began operations on 1 November 2009 – its first classes started on 18 November 2009.
The Academy delivers training and education programs through three distinct channels:
CLASSROOM TRAINING. This offers our complete curriculum comprising basic chess fundamentals, foundation (skills rating between 1200-1500) and expert (skills rating of 1500-1800 and above) training, and is usually for children between 6 and 16 years of age. There are regular and holiday classes which are conducted at the centre in Desa Sri Hartamas as well as in child enrichment centres in Klang Valley.
SCHOOLS CO-CURRICULUM EDUCATION (SCHOLASTIC CHESS). This is a 30-48 week, year round program, generally conducted together with the school chess teacher and organized with activities of the school chess club, and is designed to teach children how to play chess, targeted for children between 6 and 14 years of age.
CENTRES OF EXCELLENCE. This is a lecture cum workshop series in partnership with the Ministry of Education and KL Schools Sport Council and is designed to provide both foundation and non-affiliated expert training for interested and/or talented players nominated by their respective schools.
The KL Chess Academy is also the organizer of many international chess tournaments namely the KL-Singapore Super 8 Chess Challenge held in conjunction with the Pikom PC Fair, April 2007, the inaugural ASEAN+ Youth Team Chess Championships, December 2007, Grand Prix in Schools 2008 and KL Open 2008, 2009 and 2010. The National Scholastic Chess Tournament together with MoE in November 2010, DYTM Raja Nazrin Shah Open & Masters 2011, 2012 & 2013 & 2014.
